Examinations and Consultations
During your first visit with Dr. Annette Van Natta you will receive a thorough examination in order to determine what – if any – further treatments are needed. This exam will also serve as an initial consultation, allowing Dr. Van Natta to get a better idea of your overall oral and dental health. The examination will include an in-depth review of your medical and dental history as well as any necessary x-rays and a complete oral exam. Dr. Van Natta is well-known throughout the Irving area as a compassionate and meticulous dentist who takes the time to understand each and every patient that walks through the doors. To ensure each patient has a thorough understanding of their oral health and treatment options, Dr. Van Natta aims to answer any questions you may have in a timely manner.

What You Can Expect
If you are a new patient, you can expect a comprehensive initial exam that is designed to provide Dr. Van Natta with the information necessary to assess your oral health. If it is a dental emergency, the examination may be less comprehensive in order to address the problem at hand. It is standard procedure for a patient’s medical and dental history to be reviewed during the initial exam. This is also a good time for you to express any concerns you may have or ask any questions pertaining to your oral health. Here is a brief look at what else you can expect during the initial examination with your dentist:
- Examination of your gums for periodontal disease and any
other signs of disease
- Examination of all of your teeth
- This will include an in-depth review of any existing restorations you may have
- Visual oral cancer screening
During this initial exam Dr. Van Natta may also come up with a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. If she discovers you are in need of some sort of dental restoration, braces, or another treatment, she will discuss your options with you at length. Please keep in mind that you may not receive a cleaning during the initial examination or consultation, depending on your history and needs. If this is your first visit, you may be required to undergo an examination and consultation prior to scheduling a cleaning so that Dr. Van Natta knows what type of cleaning is necessary.
In addition to the examination itself, Dr. Van Natta may suggest an additional consultation. This may be for several reasons – whether she would like to discuss your treatment options with you or as a follow up to a procedure.
Both the initial examination and consultation are designed to provide your dentist with detailed information on your oral health. Depending on your needs, Dr. Van Natta may require digital x-rays, CT scans, plaster models, and other diagnostic procedures that reach beyond a routine dental exam.
